Frank Lloyd Wright: Europe and Beyond (An Ahmanson Murphy Fine Arts Book)
Anthony Alofsin
Here is a look at a Wright who is less well-known to Americans. Through essays written by scholars who are natives as well as knowlegeable outsiders, this volume explores Wrights influence from Japan to Great Britain, France to Chile, Mexico to Russia, and the Middle East. Included are tales of champions and critics, rivals and acolytes, books and exhibitions, attitudes toward America and individualism, and the many ways Wright's ideas were brought to the world. Especially interesting is Bruno Zevi's account of traveling with Wright in Italy. Zevi was instrumental in bringing Wright's ideas to Italy and in helping launch the movement for organic architecture. Given current events in Iraq, Mina Marefat's essay on Wright's elaborate designs for a cultural center for the city of Baghdad is also engaging. The Baghdad projects, which were never realized after the assassination of King Faisal II, were Wright's principal focus in the last decade of his life. TABLE OF CONTENTS: 1. Wright, Influence, and the World at Large, Anthony Alofsin 2. Wright and Japan, Margo Stipe 3. Kindred Spirits: Holland, Wright, and Wijdeveld, Mariëtte van Stralen 4. Wright and Italy: A Recollection, Bruno Zevi 5. Wright and Italy: The Promise of Organic Architecture, Maristella Casciato 6. Useful Hostage: Constructing Wright in Soviet Russia and France, Jean-Louis Cohen 7. Wright and Great Britain, Andrew Saint 8. Wright and South America, Alberto Sartori 9. Towards an Organic Architecture in Mexico, Keith Eggener 10.Wright's Baghdad, Mina Marefat
