Tales from the Blue Ox
Dan Brett
Here is a fascinating collection of the best tools, techniques, and recipes from the Victorian era, often considered the "golden age" of craftsmanship. The Blue Ox Historic Millworks Park in Northern California keeps these arts alive in its museum, sawmill, and custom woodworking shop, where they specialize in making the gingerbread decoration of Victorian-era homes. It also has studios for black-smithing, metal casting, boat building, pottery, and vintage printing. The crafts and skills practiced there are discussed, but the most interesting part of the book, for woodworkers, are the dozens of formulas for homemade paints, varnishes, glues, and other concoctions.
