This book presents a visual history of furniture design since 1945. With the huge technological advances in materials and techniques made during the Second World War and the rise in consumer demand, innovative furniture designers began to produce furniture only imagined before. From the 1945 sculptural molded plywood chairs of Charles and Ray Eames, through the revolutionary 1950's designs, (including Harry Bertoia's wire Diamond chairs and Eero Saarinen's futuristic Pedestal Group,) then the eccentricities of kitsch in the late '50's, design exploded. The Pop Culture of the '60's, the development of Counter Design by Ettore Sottsass, the factory lights and scaffolding supports of High-Tech, the Craft Revival, Art Furniture, and Ergonomic styling, burgeoned. All are documented here, in photographs, designer biographies, a bibliography, a list of retail outlets and museums, and advice on collecting.
